On 10th March 2022, Mun Hean (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd held a Technical Seminar on Protection Relays in Electrical Protection System and Power Quality Solutions at De Rhu Beach Resort Kuantan, Pahang. The seminar was attended by more than 70 participants ranging from the Ministry of Works / Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Negeri Pahang, consultants from various companies, and contractors.

Ir. Ts. Kuan Jew Xun and Ts. David Lee were the key speakers of the event and together, they shared more than 30 years in the field of Electrical Protection and Power Quality solutions. Both speakers are Technologists registered with the Malaysia Board of Technologist (MBOT).

Ir. Ts. Kuan, a Professional Engineer registered with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), covered the first part of the seminar on the topic of Electrical Protection Relays. He explained that electrical protection is the most important component in the electrical system when it comes to electrical safety. The protection system interrupts the electrical system in the event of an electrical fault, such as overload current and fault current. This system not only prevents equipment from damage, but it also saves lives.

In the second part of the seminar, Ts. David Lee talked about how as electrical equipment are designed for greater energy efficiency, power quality in electrical systems is increasingly put under strain. Poor power quality comes in the form of harmonics issues, poor power factor and manifestation of electrical transients. While being susceptible to penalties from the utilities, poor power quality also causes disruptions, poor production efficiency, equipment damage and reduction in equipment lifespan.

After 1 full day, the seminar concluded with enthusiastic exchange of technical discussion between the participants and the speakers. A demonstration area was set up where participants gained hands-on experience with Mun Hean’s latest range of MH Protection Relays.

The seminar was a considerable success and we would like to thank the key speakers as well as the participants for making the effort despite local Covid restrictions. We much positive feedback garnered, the Mun Hean Malaysian team are planning for the next instalment for this technical seminar.
